FINE & RARE c1875 GORHAM STERLING SILVER & MIXED METAL FRUIT KNIFE; IN THE JAPANESE TASTE; BRILLIANT TETHERED EAGLE MIXED METAL HANDLE; SWIRLING FLORAL STERLING BLADE We are pleased to offer this exceptionally fine c1875 Gorham mixed metal and sterling silver blade Japanesque fruit knife. One of several we will be offering. Meiji period Japanese silver was the finest the world has ever known. Much was crafted by former Samurai. Imperial decree had outlawed their warrior culture. Forcing the Samurai to channel centuries old sword making skills into breathtaking presentation and household silver. The Meiji silver artisans were so highly regarded that Tiffany, Gorham and the leading British firms sent their staff to Japan to "learn" (steal) the secrets of the Samurai. This fine and rare c1875 tethered eagle handle knife, beautifully illustrates Gorham's interpretation of a Japanese kodzuka (small knife). The mixed metal handle with brilliantly detailed tethered eagle, gold accents. Perched atop thick bamboo pole. A pair of song birds overhead. Thankful for the secure tethering. The beautifully detailed design to both sides. The sterling silver blade with delicate bright cut engraved streaming florals, and dragon fly. Different floral display to the blade's other side. Hallmarked Sterling and Gorham trademarks. Never monogrammed. This rare c1875 Gorham Japanesque sterling silver and mixed metal fruit knife 7 3/4 inches long. In very fine condition. Rich, lustreous sterling patina to blade. The brilliant tethered eagle handle and streaming floral blade retain much of their original crisp, vibrant detail. Some loss of gold accents and mild tarnish as shown. For the discerning collector of the finest Gorham Japanesque silver.
